Golddiggers

Word of the discovery of gold in California spread like a wildfire across the nation and the seas. The rush to get in on the prospect of becoming rich brought people running from all directions.
Tehama County proved not be the place to find gold, but support for the miners who moved northward, up the river and into the mountains in search of the precious metal, became the role of this area. Riverboat traffic stopped at the city of Tehama and goods travel further to the miners by horse back, wagons, and stage coach.

A most cost effective way to search for gold was to "pan for gold." People used any type of flat bottomed container they could find. Skillets, wash bowls, hats and cups were often used to accomplish the purpose of seperating gold from dirt and rocks by washing and sifting. Gold pans were developed by various miners from materials at hand; today a variety of such devices may be purchased or rented to aid present day prospectors spend a day "panning for gold."
